2011

May 31st, June 1st & 2nd. (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday) Paul Wells: Decorative tricks and techniques.
This is a fabulous course for anyone working on a dolls house or roombox, whatever its style or period. Using only hand tools and inexpensive products such as mount board, you will learn to create brickwork, stonework, half-timbering with plaster infill, and various wood finishes for planked floors and beams, all looking like the real thing, but achieved in very little time. Each technique will have its own A4 sheet, showing every stage of the process, with Paul’s printed notes. You will learn to do marbling and weathering, and how to make slates, tiles, flagstones and quarry tiles—using scalpels and brushes, with simple products such as gesso, waxes and powdered pigments. Paul is an expert model-maker and students learn many modelling secrets and achieve stunning results.
Cost of course: £150. Cost of materials: £10 (payable on the course). (Four places).

June 14, 15 &16. (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday). Dave Hurley: Carved Panels
This time Dave is going to lead you in carving some elaborate panels: one large and probably two small ones. The plan is that these can be incorporated into a piece of furniture of your own devising, or used as a mantelpiece or panel built into a room. He hopes to cover several different types of carving, so that you can use many of the special carving tools which he provides. Returning students will have these, but newcomers can borrow or buy a set.
No previous experience is required, but Dave’s courses are so popular that students want to rebook for the next one immediately. Get yourself on the waiting list as people often have to drop out.
Cost: £150. Kit for workshop, payable on the course: £30. (Full).

June 28, 29 and 30. (Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday). General Course.
As April above. Cost: £125. (Full)

August 23, 24 and 25 (Tues, Wed & Thurs): David Hurley: Carved Panels
This is a repeat of the course on June 14, 15 and 16. A photo of the panels will be available later in the year.
Dave’s carving tools will again be available to borrow or buy. If you have borrowed them on a previous course,
please let him know, so he brings enough sets.
Cost: £150. Kit for workshop, payable on the course: £30. (Three places)

September 27, 28 & 29 (Tues, Wed & Thurs): Paul Wells: Art Deco Apartment
Paul envisions this roombox as a New York apartment, possibly with an elevator door visible, but it can be styled to suit your own interests.
He will provide a 1/12th scale box (approximately 12” wide by 6” deep) with a special stepped frame, and the interior walls will be angled to allow a good view of the typical wall decoration and to provide recesses and alcoves. You will create a multicoloured terrazzo floor and cast resin fireplace, and decorate the room with period colours and typical Art Deco features, including a sunburst design.
Moved to May 2012

October 18, 19 and 20 (Tues, Wed & Thurs): Diane Harfield: Cold Porcelain Flowers
Diane has not yet decided on the theme for this workshop, but regular students know that she will accommodate most requests. She has her own cutters and special tools for making all sorts of flowers and plants, and you will be amazed by what you achieve in three days.
Cost: £150. Kit for workshop, payable on the course: £15. (Full)
